Remission of Type 2 Diabetes and Reversal of Insulin Resistance with Lifestyle Medicine
The Remission of Type 2 Diabetes and Reversal of Insulin Resistance with Lifestyle Medicine course, offered by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM), provides an evidence-based overview of lifestyle medicine as a therapeutic approach for adults with type 2 diabetes. Designed for an interprofessional healthcare audience, the course reviews the pathophysiology of insulin resistance, consensus definitions of type 2 diabetes remission, and the scientific evidence supporting lifestyle-based interventions. Learners analyze the effectiveness of comprehensive lifestyle medicine approaches, apply guideline-informed interventions to clinical scenarios, evaluate patient-specific factors influencing remission and safe medication deprescribing, and integrate team-based strategies to support sustained remission where appropriate.
Target Audience
This course is applicable for interprofessional healthcare team including physicians, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician associates, registered dietitians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, other health professionals working with chronic disease prevention or treatment, certified health coaches, and clinicians in training.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to
- Explain key pathophysiologic mechanisms driving insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes using clinically relevant physiologic models (Understand).
- Differentiate consensus definitions and clinical criteria for type 2 diabetes remission from glycemic control and disease management paradigms (Analyze).
- Interpret evidence on the efficacy of lifestyle medicine interventions for achieving remission and reversing insulin resistance (Analyze).
- Apply lifestyle medicine principles to clinical cases to select patient-centered strategies supporting type 2 diabetes remission across care settings (Apply).
- Evaluate patient readiness, risks, and clinical context to determine appropriateness and timing of medication deprescribing during lifestyle-based remission efforts (Evaluate).
- Coordinate interprofessional roles and referrals to implement a team-based care plan supporting sustained lifestyle intervention and ongoing monitoring for type 2 diabetes remission (Apply).
