Tuesday Concurrent Block 2: From Behavior to Longevity: Using Wearable Tech to Personalize Lifestyle Medicine

Personalized nutrition (PN) is a cornerstone of lifestyle medicine and whole-person care, offering the potential to address chronic disease by tailoring dietary and lifestyle interventions to individual needs. Despite its promise, scaling PN into routine clinical practice remains a significant challenge. Lifestyle medicine clinicians face barriers such as limited access to precise, actionable patient data, time constraints, financial constraints, and the complexity of integrating diverse datasets into patient care. These challenges often impede the delivery of truly individualized care at the scale necessary to address the chronic disease epidemic effectively. Wearable technology has emerged as a powerful tool to overcome these obstacles. Devices such as continuous glucose monitors, fitness and activity trackers, body composition analyzers, and tools for monitoring cardiovascular health, hormone levels, and sleep patterns provide real-time insights into patient behavior and physiology. These technologies allow clinicians to obtain dynamic, objective data that can enhance clinical decision-making. When combined with artificial intelligence (AI), wearable devices enable the synthesis of large datasets into actionable insights, allowing clinicians to prioritize interventions, monitor progress, and track outcomes more effectively. Research demonstrates that wearables can also improve patient adherence to dietary and lifestyle interventions, particularly when paired with targeted coaching and personalized care plans. This session will explore how clinicians and other healthcare professionals can leverage wearable technology and data analytics to enhance the delivery of personalized nutrition within a lifestyle medicine framework. Specifically, the session will highlight the role of wearable technology in personalized nutrition. We will also review evidence-based outcomes and case studies that showcase the integration of wearable data into lifestyle medicine practices. We will discuss practical strategies for implementation and how real-time feedback from wearables fosters patient engagement and empowerment, encouraging sustained adherence to lifestyle interventions. Lastly, the session will cover the role of personalized coaching and education in maximizing the impact of wearable technology. By focusing on the practical application of wearable technology in personalized nutrition, this session provides actionable strategies for clinicians to enhance patient care. Attendees will leave with tools to integrate wearable data into their practice, empowering them to deliver personalized, effective, and scalable lifestyle medicine interventions that address the root causes of chronic disease. This session will provide a roadmap for leveraging technology in the context of lifestyle medicine, bridging the gap between cutting-edge tools and real-world clinical practice. Attendees will gain practical insights into how wearable technology can not only drive behavior change but also revolutionize the way nutrition and lifestyle care are delivered, ultimately contributing to improved population health and a reduction in chronic disease burden.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the challenges in scaling personalized nutrition, including data integration, clinician time constraints, and patient engagement barriers.
  2. Evaluate evidence from recent studies demonstrating the role of wearable technology—such as continuous glucose monitors, activity trackers, and sleep monitors—in driving behavior change and improving health outcomes.
  3. Incorporate wearable-derived data into clinical workflows to optimize nutrition recommendations, prioritize lifestyle interventions, and monitor patient progress effectively.
  4. Apply patient-centered communication techniques to empower individuals to use wearable technology and real-time health data for sustained behavior change and improved quality of life.
