Monday Concurrent Block 3: Research Abstract Oral Presentations

HOW CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINERS SUPPORT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN A LIFESTYLE MEDICINE PRACTICE
Presenter: Hunt Devyani, MD
Description: Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCs) are medical professionals who are an untapped resource for interprofessional lifestyle medicine practices. ATCs work under the direction of a physician and are trained in several areas, including prevention, assessment, therapeutic intervention, and critical incident management. Athletic trainers are beneficial advocates for movement, health, and wellness.  The addition of a certified athletic trainer to our interprofessional team improved physical activity education and available support.  Patients were highly satisfied (87%) with shared medical appointments focused on movement.  Ninety-four percent of participants believed the information and practice was useful, and 90% would recommend the program to their friends.

SHARED MEDICAL APPOINTMENT SIMULATIONS FOR LIFESTYLE MEDICINE EDUCATION: A PILOT STUDY
Presenter: Alayna M. Santarosa, MPH
Description: How can we train future physicians to deliver lifestyle medicine confidently - before they even step onto the wards? This session presents a novel pre-clerkship lifestyle medicine (LM) course using shared medical appointment (SMA) simulations to instill LM competencies. Grounded in the PAVING the Path to Wellness model and ACLM core pillars, this course provided medical students with immersive learning in group-based LM delivery. Participants designed and facilitated SMAs, received structured feedback, and reflected on real-world challenges in lifestyle counseling. Discover how this scalable model boosted confidence across UME competencies, strengthened faculty expertise, and sparked enthusiasm for LM integration. Attendees will walk away with insights, tools, and templates to bring experiential learning into their own educational or clinical settings.

SHOP WITH THE DOC: FEASIBILITY AND IMPACT OF CULTURAL GROCERY TOURS ON NUTRITION EDUCATION
Presenter: Michelle Loy, MD, FAAP, DipABLM, DipABOIM
Description: Discover how culturally tailored grocery store tours can serve as practical, community-based nutrition education tools. This session presents findings from the "Shop with the Doc" pilot program, highlighting its feasibility, participant engagement, and impact on purchasing behaviors. Attendees will gain insights into designing inclusive, scalable interventions that integrate lifestyle medicine principles with real-world food environments.

STROLL FOR CONNECTION - INTERGENERATIONAL HEALING PROGRAM: FEASIBILITY AND DEVELOPMENT
Presenter: Sachiko Komagata, PhD, PT, CEP-ACSM, NBC-HWC
Description: Social isolation among older adults in the U.S. can impact their quality of life. This presentation introduces “Stroll for Connection,” a low-cost, sustainable, intergenerational program in Ocean County, NJ. Held monthly at a local arboretum, it fosters safe, meaningful community connection through outdoor walks. Over five years, focus group interviews documented positive effects among participants. While further research is warranted, the program’s benefits may extend beyond individuals, creating a ripple effect throughout the wider community.
