Module 1: Introduction to Lifestyle Medicine
This introductory module features ACLM’s Introduction to Lifestyle Medicine 1.5-hour course by Dr. Cate Collings, ensuring every learner begins with a strong foundation and introduction to the field of lifestyle medicine. Then, Dr. Beth Frates and Dr. Jacob Mirsky, leaders in the field of lifestyle medicine, present the transformative power of lifestyle changes in treating, reversing, and preventing chronic diseases in a short video that can be used with to introduce lifestyle medicine to patients. The video outlines the six foundational pillars of lifestyle medicine—whole food plant-predominant nutrition, physical activity, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, restorative sleep, and social connection—and emphasizes the importance of evidence-based approaches to health. Learners are encouraged to take control of their well-being through sustainable, personalized lifestyle changes supported by clinical research.

Brenda Rea, MD, DrPH, PT, RD, DipABLM, FACLM
Brenda serves as the Medical Director of Education for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and has over 20 years of knowledge and experience mentoring health professional students, medical students, residents and fellows in nutrition, lifestyle medicine and whole person care. Brenda completed her education at Loma Linda University Health, including family, preventive and lifestyle medicine specialties and has remained affiliated as faculty. She is passionate about training a new generation of physicians and health professionals to use nutrition and lifestyle medicine to treat and reverse chronic disease and strives to model these principles personally.
Cate Collings, MD, MS, FACC, DipABLM
Dr. Collings is Director of Lifestyle Medicine for Silicon Valley Medical Development and El Camino Health Medical Network in the San Francisco Bay Area. She serves as current President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.
Dr. Collings has dual board certifications in Cardiology and Lifestyle Medicine. She holds a graduate degree in exercise physiology, as well as professional culinary and wellness certifications. She received her education from the University of California, University of Wisconsin, and Stanford University Medical Center. She is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society.
She has served in multiple capacities and leadership positions at El Camino Hospital over the past 25 years including Medical Director of the Cardiopulmonary Wellness Center, Women’s Heart Health, and the Heart and Vascular Institute and participates in the American College of Cardiology’s Nutrition and Lifestyle Task Force. Within ACLM, she co-chaired the initiation of ACLM’s Education Committee and has participated in course reviews.
She now focuses exclusively on lifestyle medicine consultations, culinary medicine, and developing clinical Lifestyle Medicine programs that are both tech and human connect-enabled.
Beth Frates, MD, DipABLM, FACLM
Dr. Beth Frates is a trained physiatrist and a health and wellness coach, with expertise in Lifestyle Medicine. She has received several teaching accolades from Harvard Extension School and Harvard Medical School, where she is an Associate Professor, Part-Time. Dr. Frates is one of the first Fellows of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and a pioneer in lifestyle medicine. In 2008, Dr. Frates created the first Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group at Harvard Medical School. In 2014, she developed and taught a college Lifestyle Medicine curriculum at the Harvard Extension School, and it is still one of the most well-received courses offered at the school. In 2017, Dr. Frates was selected to be one of four item writers for the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine’s inaugural exam for certification in this specialty. She was voted President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine in August 2020. Dr. Frates served as President until November 2024, and now serves two years as Immediate Past President. Dr. Frates co-authored The Lifestyle Medicine Handbook: An Introduction to the Power of Healthy Habits, which was ranked in the top 20 by Book Authority for medical books released in 2018. To accompany the syllabus and handbook, she also co-created Lifestyle Medicine 101, a full college curriculum with 12 weeks of PowerPoints and a teacher’s manual, which is free and accessible through the ACLM website. In addition, Dr. Frates co-authored The Teen Lifestyle Medicine Handbook, published in October 2020 which when paired with the Teen Curriculum consisting of a Teacher’s Manual and 12 PowerPoint decks can be used to teach and empower middle-school and high school students to adopt and sustain healthy habits. In 2023, Dr. Frates co-authored The Lifestyle Medicine Pocket Guide and co-edited the book Empowering Behavior Change in Patients. Most recently, in June 2024, she co-edited the book Essentials of Clinical Nutrition in Healthcare. Dr. Frates has created and implemented a 12-Step wellness program, PAVING the Path to Wellness™ for patients and providers. Most recently, she co-authored the book PAVING the Path to Wellness Workbook: A Guide to Thriving with a Healthy Body, Peaceful Mind and Joyful Heart. As of the fall of 2020, In addition, Dr. Frates has her own Lifestyle Medicine consulting/coaching practice where she sees patients 1:1 and in groups.
Jacob Mirsky, MD, MA, DipABLM
Dr. Jacob Mirsky is a primary care physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital Revere HealthCare Center. Dr. Mirsky attended medical school at the University of California San Francisco and completed residency in Internal Medicine at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston as part of the Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates primary care track. Dr. Mirsky views healthy lifestyle changes, through patient education and empowerment, as the cornerstone of health. In addition to his primary care practice, he leads Lifestyle Medicine group visits (also called Shared Medical Appointments) in primary care for symptom management and disease prevention. Dr. Mirsky co-founded and is the Medical Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine Healthy Lifestyle Program (HLP); the HLP has a vision of establishing healthy lifestyle change as the standard of care for preventing and treating chronic disease. At present, the HLP is the largest Lifestyle Medicine program in the country at an academic medical center. Dr. Mirsky also founded the MGH Revere Food Pantry and Teaching Kitchen in 2019; he is now its Medical Director. The MGH Revere Food Pantry and Teaching Kitchen treats both food insecurity and chronic disease by providing free plant-based foods to patients with food insecurity. In 2023, Dr. Mirsky founded Lifestyle Medicine Consulting LLC. In his role as a Lifestyle Medicine consultant, he partners with providers, clinics, and health systems to develop and scale effective Lifestyle Medicine clinical programs, including Shared Medical Appointments.
