Saturday Pre-Conference Workshop: GLP-1s: The "Great Little Peptides" - Clinical Use and Lifestyle Medicine Integration
The integration of GLP-1 receptor agonists with lifestyle medicine principles represents a crucial advancement in treating metabolic disorders through a comprehensive, evidence-based approach. This workshop specifically addresses how GLP-1 receptor agonists can complement and enhance lifestyle interventions across multiple domains, including nutrition, physical activity, stress management, and sleep optimization. The workshop emphasizes practical strategies for healthcare providers to effectively combine pharmacological treatment with lifestyle medicine pillars, maximizing patient outcomes through this synergistic approach. This workshop employs Knowles' principles of adult learning to create an engaging, practice-focused educational experience. The structure prioritizes collaborative learning and real-world clinical applications, recognizing participants as experienced clinicians whose expertise enriches the learning environment.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the physiological mechanisms and interactions between endogenous GLP-1, nutrient-stimulated hormones (NUSHs), and their pharmacological analogs in relation to glucose homeostasis, appetite regulation, and weight control processes.
- Analyze the clinical evidence demonstrating the efficacy of GLP-1 receptor agonists in obesity management type 2 diabetes treatment, cardiovascular disease prevention, and other health outcomes.
- Design comprehensive treatment plans that integrate GLP-1 receptor agonists with lifestyle medicine principles, including selecting appropriate intervention combinations, implementing timing and sequencing strategies, and evaluating treatment effectiveness.
