Lifestyle Medicine Medical School Curriculum
Preparing medical students for what’s next in healthcare.
For more than 20 years, the American College of Lifestyle Medicine has advanced evidence-based lifestyle medicine education and helped equip health professionals to address the growing burden of chronic disease. LMMSC brings that expertise to undergraduate medical education, preparing future physicians with the knowledge and practical skills to apply lifestyle medicine in prevention, treatment, and whole-person care.
The Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum (LMRC) enables residency programs to deliver a comprehensive, evidence-based educational experience that prepares residents to not only treat, reverse and prevent chronic disease but also to enhance outcomes for themselves and the communities they will care for. Upon completion of the LMRC, residents qualify to sit for the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine (ABLM) certification exam.
Designed for flexible integration across M1–M4, the curriculum includes:
10 flexible learning modules
40+ hours of evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine education
60+ hours of optional application activities and assignments for deeper learning and curriculum integration
Clinical cases and practical application designed to help students translate lifestyle medicine knowledge into patient care
Built-in assessments to support evaluation of student learning
ACLM-hosted learning platform and student technical support
Faculty implementation resources and curriculum integration guidance
Completion reporting and ongoing content updates
Opportunities to incorporate additional ACLM educational resources, including Culinary Medicine, to further expand nutrition education and competency coverage
The practicum component includes:
- 400 lifestyle medicine-related patient encounters
- 10 hours of (Intensive) therapeutic lifestyle change (ITLC or TLC) program experience
- 10 hours of group facilitation experience
Why integrate the LMMSC?
Strengthen lifestyle medicine education
Chronic disease remains one of the greatest challenges facing health care, yet future physicians may receive limited opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills needed to address the lifestyle-related factors that influence health and disease. LMMSC provides evidence-based lifestyle medicine education designed specifically for undergraduate medical education, helping students build a strong foundation in prevention, treatment, behavior change, and whole-person care.
Integrate without building from scratch
Building comprehensive lifestyle medicine education requires more than finding educational content. Schools must identify evidence-based resources, determine where learning fits within their existing curriculum, develop assessments and clinical applications, support faculty implementation, track student progress, and keep content current as evidence evolves. LMMSC brings these elements together in one implementation-ready solution, allowing institutions to focus on educating future physicians rather than building and maintaining a comprehensive curriculum from the ground up.
Prepare students to translate knowledge into clinical practice
Lifestyle medicine education is most impactful when students are prepared to apply what they learn in real-world patient care. LMMSC connects evidence-based knowledge with clinical cases, patient assessment, communication, behavior change strategies, and approaches to the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. Students learn to consider nutrition, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, social connection, and avoidance of risky substances as part of comprehensive, whole-person care.
