The Effect of Text Message-Based mHealth Interventions on Physical Activity and Weight Loss: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (AJLM Volume 20, Issue 6)

Physical inactivity and obesity are detrimental to one’s overall health, as they increase the risk of developing non-communicable diseases. Fortunately, physical inactivity and obesity can be improved by supporting lifestyle behavior changes. This support may be provided remotely by Mobile Health (mHealth) messaging interventions, which involve using mobile messages for health improvement. This study aimed to determine the effect of mHealth interventions using unidirectional text messaging/instant messaging on physical activity and weight-related outcomes in adult populations.

This activity expires August 18, 2027, at 11:59 PM PST.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the current evidence on the effectiveness of unidirectional text message-based mHealth interventions for promoting physical activity and weight management.
  • Evaluate factors that may influence the effectiveness of mobile messaging interventions, including tailoring, behavioral theory, and intervention design.
  • Apply evidence-based principles when incorporating mHealth strategies into lifestyle medicine interventions aimed at improving physical activity and weight-related outcomes.

Activity Format

This activity consists of 1 AJLM article and 1 hour of content.

Target Audience

This activity is applicable for interprofessional healthcare team including physicians, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physician associates, registered dietitians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, other health professionals working with chronic disease prevention or treatment, certified health coaches, and clinicians in training.

  2. Assess the impact of unidirectional text message-based mHealth interventions on weight-related outcomes and obesity management.
  3. Interpret key findings from systematic reviews and meta-analyses, including standardized mean differences, confidence intervals, heterogeneity, and quality of evidence.
  4. Compare characteristics of mHealth interventions that may influence effectiveness, including tailoring, theory-based messaging, bidirectional communication, and multimodal intervention design.
