Module 1: Course Overview & Foundational Concepts

Learning Objectives

After viewing the lecture presentation, learners should be able to:

  1. Define type 2 diabetes (T2D) according to diagnostic criteria, identifying areas of overlap and/or differentiation from other forms of diabetes, including type 1 diabetes (T1D), latent autoimmune diabetes of adulthood (LADA), maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY), prediabetes, and gestational diabetes (GDM).
  2. Describe the epidemiologic impact of T2D and identify factors leading to increased socioeconomic burden of disease.
  3. Characterize the pathophysiology of insulin resistance and contrast this with normal cellular function.
  4. Review the historical perspective on the reversal of insulin resistance and remission of T2D.
  5. Define T2D remission as described by consensus of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), Diabetes UK, the Endocrine Society, and further endorsed by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM).
  6. Compare conventional management and lifestyle medicine approaches for the treatment of T2D, incorporating ACLM's Type 2 Diabetes Bill of Rights and applying these principles to a clinical case.
  7. Identify the role of ACLM’s 2025 Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) in promoting lifestyle interventions for treatment and remission of type 2 diabetes in adults and briefly describe the guideline framework, including the 14 Key Action Statements (KAS).
